Railroading Merit Badge

Posted on Dec 7 2013 - 12:07pm

Here's a merit badge that is easy and fun to do. We tend to take rail services for granted. However, rail service was instrumental in building our nation. Today we use rail service to transport massive amounts of goods to and from our port cities. Here in our area, we have the Metra commuter service. One of the oldest and largest rail companies is the Union Pacific Railroad that runs right through Cary. Even Cary has rail service to thank for establishing it as a village. Our town was called Cary Station until it became a village by vote on January 9, 1893. Amtrak recently announced that is is offering 110 mph rail service between Dwight and Pontiac Illinois on the Lincoln Service Line from Chicago to St. Louis. New service is being added soon to the Quad Cities and to Dubuque Iowa. Two operating rail museums are within a half hour drive from Cary: Illinois Railway Museum and the Fox River Trolley Museum. You can even satisfy Req. 1 by taking a look at our Christmas layout. Contact Mr. Friend.
